Freckles

Freckles are caused by uneven distribution of skin pigment melanin in the skin. Upon exposure to UV light, the outer layers of the skin (the epidermis) thicken and the pigment-producing cells (the melanoytes) in the skin produce the pigment melanin at an increased rate and caused the freckles to become darker in colour. Irrespective of skin colour, freckles are areas of uneven distribution of melanin deposition in the skin.
